1) Q: Do you have to be a Rec member to join the climbing gym?
1) A: No. Climb San Juan has its own membership options!

2) Q: Can I be a member of the The Rec and the climbing gym?
2) A: Most definitely, Climb San Juan has an add-on feature. This way you can add climbing to your Rec membership for a big discount.

3) Q: How old does someone have to be to climb?
3) A: Minimum age is 4 years old. 8 and under must be supervised by an adult unless in a class. Only people 14 and over may belay another person.

4) Q: Can I use the ropes?
4) A: You must get belay checked by Patrick before using the ropes! There’s a ropes class to learn the knots and belay technique.

5) Q: Is there a waiver to sign before climbing?
5) A: Yes, the waiver can be signed on the website or in person. Minors must have a guardian signature!

6) Q: I am new to climbing. What if I don’t know how it all works?
6) A: Many folks on island are new to climbing. There are introductory classes available to get you up to speed. Classes can be signed up for independently, but are also included with a membership!

7) Q: What if I don’t have any climbing gear?
7) A: All the climbing gear (shoes, chalk, harness, gri gri/ATC) are available as rentals! Our climbing shoes go from a kids 13 to an adult size 15.

8) Q: Does the layout of the gym change?
8) A: For sure! Rock climbing gyms consistently change their routes to keep patrons engaged. Look out for the route setting days to get involved with the route setting process, no experience necessary.

9) Q: Can I rent out the climbing gym for a private event?
9) A: There is an option to rent the gym out for 90 minutes at a time! Check out the rentals page or email Patrick for more details.

10) Q: Can I freeze my climbing membership?
10) A: Yup, a membership may be frozen for $5/month.

11) Q: What if I want to purchase my own gear?
11) A: There are wholesale options for shoes, chalk, chalk bags, and more. There is also a shoe infographic and order form above the rental shoes. Consult Patrick for more info. You’re welcome to bring all your own gear but please go easy on the chalk!

12) Q: Can I share a punch card pass?
12) A: Yes, a punch card can be shared with others but cannot be used for classes.

13) Q: Is there a family rate?
13) A: Kinda! There is a couple’s discount along with a kids’ discount when put together turn into a full family discount. The couple’s discount only works if they sign up for the same type of membership on the same day

14) Q: Can I climb while there are classes/programs ongoing?
14) A: Sometimes. Ladies Night and Youth class are usually a private space for those climbers whereas private events are always a private space since it has been booked.

15) Q: Do I have to use climbing shoes?
15) A: There is no barefoot climbing and no street shoes allowed on the pads. The only options are renting climbing shoes, bringing your own climbing shoes, or bringing a second pair of clean tennis shoes. Socks will get torn up!

16) Q: If I buy a day pass, can I come back to use it again?
16) A: Yes, come as much as you want for that day! Once the gym closes and reopens, a new day has started. Rental gear must be charged for each use though.

17) Q: Is there music in the gym?
17) A: Yes, and you’re welcome to connect a bluetooth device to play your own tunes. My speakers are connected to a device called Fosi Audio.

18) Q: Do I have to pay for rental gear each time I show up?
18) A: You may prepay for rental gear at the front desk using a punch card system.

19) Q: Can I use the The Rec’s facilities if I’m just a climbing member or just bought a climbing day pass?
19) A: The facilities available to Climb San Juan members and day pass users are bathrooms, locker rooms, water fountains, and showers.

20) Q: Are gift cards available?
20) A: Ya! Almost everything you can buy normally can be used to give as a gift card. Ask the front desk for details.

21) Q: Do I need a reservation to climb?
21) A: Nope.

22) Q: Are there employer discounts around the island?
22) A: Oh yea! Valmark employees can get their membership completely paid for, 3 months at a time. Peacehealth employees can get a month to month membership for $35 a month.

23) Q: When can I use the aerial silks?
23) A: During open silks or during instructor-led classes.

24) Q: How do the taped routes work?
24) A: Ignore the hold colors, use only the brighter/thicker tape colors, and follow the instructions on the markers. The difficulty label will be free-floating on the wall with matching tape.

25) Q: How do the regular routes work?
25) A: Follow a certain color hold or type (wood/tie dye) and use the thin tape for hand starts and finishes. The difficulty rating will be under a hold from the route near the beginning.
